He finally made it, safe and sound.
howdy, In Mcmurdo, weather good 33 *F… have refresher snow school tomorrow, then environmental training, setup our sleep kits and equipment for field then thursday or friday we fly out we have ordered beer for the fieldcamp, 9 cases…. way low from shot hole 2002, when we have 580 lbs of beer whisky and wine for 5 guys in 7 weeks… anyway, dinner is now so I’m out of here…
And gives a weather report.
howdy, flight # AZM028, reporting time is 0600 Monday 1st Dec shuttle pickup at 0530 …
waaaay too early in the morning, but it appears we are on our way again… this time to Mcmurdo… weather in mctown scattered clouds 27*F wind east 10 mph pressure 28.77 in.
More of same– waiting on a plane.
we (Krissy Paul Bill and me) are waiting for weather/plane to fly us to mactown….there is a flight coming in from the US with more of the crew on it and should be here monday….
my report is that I am walking around chc a LOT, as Raytheon does not want us out of touch and/or away from chc…we are getting bored , there already are people going to the movies (to see the new Bond flick) anyway, weather good, health fair, and I am waiting….
Maybe THIS time is for real. (Dad’s edits are NOT in italics)
hey I got this email this morning…. so it may well be I do not fly to mactown until tuesday. I will let people know….but as of now we do not know what flight to mcmurdo we will be on.
FORWARDED MESSAGE FOLLOWS:
Subject: Sunday flight?
hello,
I just heard there is space on the Rotator this Sunday. (It rotates the
crew for the 109th air national guard, hence the name.)
The Guard does not like to take Paxs (passengers) on these flights. They are doing us
a favor, let them know you appreciate them making space for us.
The current manifest includes
Tim, Marie, Natalie, Logan and Spruce. (NOTE: I’M NOT ON IT!)
These people were selected to get them down here in time for Happy
Camper on Tuesday and Wednesday. (NOTE: I DON’T NEED HAPPY CAMPER (snow survival) SCHOOL)
If they don’t make it on Sunday, then there may be a one week wait until
they get through Happy Camper.
The flight will be on a LC-130. If the flight boomerangs it could be a
10 hour flight. Seating space may be very tight. (NOTE: WEB SEATING AND LOTS OF NOISE!
There is a C-17 scheduled for Monday, but if the weather is good it will
be used as a fuel drop (NOTE: THIS MEANS THEY WILL DO A FUEL CARGO DROP WITH PARACHUTES) and there will not be any paxs. If the weather is bad at the drop site (AGAP) (NOTE: FIELD CAMP ) then Monday’s C-17 might bring
all of ICDS and SCO personell to mactown. (NOTE: THIS MEANS ME ….)
Yep– flight delayed again. Imagine the uproar if they did this at O’Hare.
it seems that either the weather in mactown, or the national guard crew having too much flight time without a rest,or the airplane having a problem with maintenence, canceled my flight, I was woken up by the hotel lady about an hour before I was to be picked up to go to the airport, she told me the flight was canceled and to go back to bed … have not yet heard when I do go …. there have been instances of Ice crew waiting for as many as 14 days before they are able to make the flight…and while I do like chc, I am spending money every day…. hey dave v. how’s our lottery doing? get out and actually buy the winning tickets so I can really enjoy this town….
Looks like they will finally let him leave new Zealand…. later.
I have a flight to mcmurdo, 00:45 shuttle pickup to cdc, then a flight off ground at @ 1:45 am this morning (friday) I should be in mactown at @ 6:30 or so…. just in time for breakfast of 4 year old dehydrated scrambled eggs….we are supposed to fly to WAIS monday? but as weather changes, so do flight times… we shall see.. anyway, more chc itialian pizza, ( which does not hold a candle to pizza pit… ) but the beer was good…
Still wandering around Christchurch waiting on a plane.
I spent the day just wandering around christchurch (chc) . lunch was seafood, dinner was thai curry. (come to anne’s thai ) was the sign outside her shop…
weather was variable, sunny and warm then cool if the sun hide behind clouds…kinda breezy the whole day.. picked up a book on the world of cricket… was told that I fly out friday morning, but I won’t hear about the details until they have figured out what is going on themselves, seems WAIS is on the second day of a 7 day weather pattern of high winds and snow… and it is enveloping mcmurdo… Jay Johnson flew out this morning, he is the Lead Driller for the project…Bill Mason and I spent the day just walking and talking… good man, Bill …. Cathleen, you saw the bags I took with me, 71 lbs of stuff.. Bill had a small backpack like mine with maybe 6 lbs of stuff….
google a map of antarctic, and look up byrd station in west antarctic, we are about 100 miles from there towards the Pole…I’ll try to get coordinates so you can google a satellite photo maybe? anyway, gonna wander some more , today, maybe bus down to the Lyttelton harbour as a tourist…
So all you folks who think the weather delays at O’Hare are bad, consider the delays for air traffic going to the Ice!
flights delayed to and from mcmurdo due to weather in Antarctica, I have to stay in christchurch another day… (boo hoo) (actually, HURRAH!) so today,I do a little shopping and walking, and beer , yes beer ,

The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind. — Humphrey Bogart
